  • From Air Koryo and rigorous border checks to our first glimpse of Pyongyang, modern architecture, revolutionary symbols, and brief power cuts set a dreamlike opening to this journey into the unknown.

  • Running out into the streets of Pyongyang to the cheers of nearly 100,000 spectators, I photographed as I went and met local residents at close range. The marathon brought out smiles and quietly narrowed the distance between us.

  • Down Reunification Highway to Panmunjom, we moved between memories of war, rural hardship, and the spectacle of the city—never quite sure what was real and what had been carefully staged.

  • From the West Sea Barrage and a model cooperative farm to the Pyongyang Metro and the Children’s Palace, we spent the day touring North Korea’s proudest achievements—an exercise in “re-education” that ultimately prompted fresh thoughts about propaganda, strength, and confidence.
